About Our AUSTIN Branch
I am descended from a JOHN AUSTIN, my ggg
grandfather, who first came to Canada from New York State around
1785. He was the first Austin to settle in Nova
Scotia. He was a United Empire Loyalist, and was granted 250 acres on the
Cobequid Road, in present-day Colchester County. He arrived with
a James Austin, who was likely his brother. You will find my Austin family
tree by clicking above.
My first introduction
to my Austin roots was at an Austin family
reunion a few years ago.
Someone had brought along
a hand-written family tree, which intrigued me to dig deeper. I owe a
great deal to my Cousin, April Austin, who forwarded to me much of her research
documentation on the Austin line, which she obtained in and around Nova Scotia.
My Father, GUY LESTER
AUSTIN (1906-1956), was the 2nd child (1st son) of seven
children born to James Edward Austin and his first wife, Hester May
Gilroy. The family lived in Cumberland County, Nova
Scotia. Granddad married again, after Grandma died, to Florence Pearson,
and they had 5 children.
