About our BARNES Branch

John is descended from a Lt. George Barnes, his gggg grandfather, of the British Army, who was stationed in New York State at the time of the American War of Independence.  He was “murdered by the rebels” in 1778.   His son, Major Christian Barnes, fought at the Battle of Queenston Heights in the War of 1812.  It is said that he was standing immediately behind General Sir Isaac Brock who was climbing a steep hill with his men, when the General was “shot in the waistcoat” from the top of the hill and “literally fell back into the arms of Christian to die”.   The Council of York recommended that Christian’s name be added to the list of United Empire Loyalists.

Major Christian Barnes, UEL, arrived in Upper Canada in 1797.  A petition for land was granted to him March 10, 1819.  He was a resident of Grantham Township, district of Niagara, for 22 years.  In 1861 he was living in Esquesing Township, Halton County, Ontario.

I am very indebted to Dorothea Clymer, a newly found 4th cousin, who has provided a great deal of information regarding our Barnes ancestors, including a copy of the book “A History of St. John’s Anglican Church, Stewarttown, Ontario”, by Lucy E. Emslie, and the following photograph:
