About
Our GARDNER Branch
My husband,
John Monkman, is a descendant of a William Gardner, his great great
grandfather, who was born about 1841 in Wheelton, Lancashire, England. He was married to Mary Ann Manley, and
together they had at least two children, one of whom was John’s great
grandfather, Samuel. You will find his
Gardner family tree by clicking above.
Samuel and
Elizabeth (nee Bubbins) both emigrated to Canada, but separately. Elizabeth and their 3 sons, William, Herbert
and Arthur, arrived in 1908. Samuel came
earlier, but we’re not sure exactly when.
Herbert & Mary (nee Davey) had three daughters, one of which is
John’s mother, Elyce Mary Gardner, the eldest.
She married James Herbert Monkman, but they were later divorced. She remarried to James Brinkman.
John’s
maternal grandparents, Herbert & Mary Gardner played a major role in his
life and that of his siblings, in the absence of a father. For a few years, they lived with their
grandparents at 44 Bowie Avenue, in Toronto.
His grandparents also owned a cottage in Baysville, Ontario, on the
Muskoka River, and John has many wonderful memories of spending his summers
there as boy.
