About Our GILROY Branch

I am descended from an Edward Gilroy, my gggg grandfather, who was born in Enniskillen, Ireland.  His son Barnabus Gilroy arrived in Canada around 1798.  Barnabus was a United Empire Loyalist, from the 54th Regiment of Westchester, New York, and he was granted 500 acres of land at River Maccan, N.S., in 1798.   His wife, Dorcas Mills, was the daughter of another UEL, David Mills.  You will find my Gilroy family tree by clicking above.

In addition to my own research, I want to acknowledge and thank some new-found cousins whom I’ve met via email and over the internet.  Robert Gilroy, Roy Gilroy, and Muriel Popham have each contributed Gilroy information which has helped me put some of the pieces of the puzzle together.

My paternal grandmother was Hester May Gilroy, the last of ten children born to Robert and Rebecca Gilroy (nee Simpson).    She married James Edward Austin, and together they had seven children.   Their second child was my father, Guy Lester Austin (1906-1956).
