About Our METCALF Branch

I am descended from a Richard Metcalf, my gggggg grandfather, who lived and died at Eppy Head Farm, Holingsby, Yorkshire, England.  My great great grandmother was Ann Metcalf, who married John Austin.  They lived in River Phillip, Cumberland, Nova Scotia.  You will find my Metcalf family tree by clicking above.

I am tremendously indebted to a new email friend and cousin, Pat Metcalfe-Kostelnik, who has done much of the research that has contributed to my Metcalf family tree, and has provided the following photographs.

Another great source of Metcalf information has been portions of a book entitled “Metcalf Families of Cumberland County, Nova Scotia” by T.H. Lodge (ca 1952) and a revision of his work done by L.P. Hall in 1989.   Following is a quote from page 2:  “Among the very first to come to Nova Scotia from Yorkshire were James Metcalf and his eldest son James, of Hawnby Parish, Yorkshire.  James (Sr.) was the ninth of ten children born to Richard Metcalf and his wife Cicely, tenants on a farm called “Eppyhead,” in the Township of Dale Town, Hawnby Parish, Yorkshire, England……It was James Metcalf who emigrated to Nova Scotia in 1772, the progenitor of all the Cumberland County Metcalfs.”
