Death Notice for Alice Parker Monkman, Christian Guardian, June 12, 1839
Died, in Albion, April 4th, Alice, wife of Mr. J. Monkman, aged 25 years. Her maiden name was Parker - daughter of William and Ruth Parker. She was born the 22nd of November, 1813, near Mohill, county of Leitrim, Ireland. At the tender age of eight years she lost her mother, who died in the triumphs of faith, near Toronto, 1821. She was married March 3rd, 1829. From early youth she was the subject of religious impressions. After her marriage her convictions became more deep and pungent; in the summer of 1829 she joined the Methodist Church, but did no experience relief from the burden of sin until near the close of the year. Constitutionally diffident, she often felt and expressed herself with fear and sometimes with doubt in regard to her state, until she obtained a blessing which filled her heart "with joy unspeakable and full of glory" at a Camp meeting held on Mr. Thos. Coxford's farm, near Yonge Street. Her natural disposition was amiable, but her constitution feeble; her piety was deep and uniform; her attendance upon all the means of grace was regular and punctual; her attachment in the Church of which she was a member was established and strong; she was the instrument of her husband's awakening and conversion; a most amiable and valued wife, and the affectionate mother of three children. The last days of her life wren scenes of holy triumph in the God of her salvationl and of affectionate and devout counsel and prayers for her husband, children and relatives, which will long be treasured up by them. She gave signs of victory through the blood of the Lamb after she lost the power of speech, and among her last words were: "Yonder's my house and portion fair; my treasure and my heart is there, and my abiding home"

Alice married James "Squire" Monkman, son of James Monkman and Mary Jane Craven, on Mar 3, 1829. James was born on Apr 25, 1807 in Allerston, Yorkshire, England, was christened on Jun 7, 1807 in Allerston, Yorkshire, England, died on Jun 29, 1881 in Arran, Bruce Cty. North, Ontario aged 74, and was buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Bruce Co., ON. Another name for James was James Munckman.

Death Notes: the Tara Leader - June 1881
"Wednesday morning, James Monkman Sr., one of Arran's oldest settlers, died from an affection of the brain. He was for many years a member of the township council, and took a lively interest in anything calculated to advance the interests of this section of Bruce."

General Notes: Squire James was the first Monkman to enter Arran Township, Bruce County, in 1856 from Castlederg, Albion Township, near Bolton, Ontario. He staked lots 16 & 17, Concession 3, and purchased lot 16 for $200 in 1859. His youngest son Thomas operated the farm until 1915. His family populated many farms during the early days of Arran. Many moved west in the migration. His big red brick house was still occupied in 1970. He was very prominent on all the county boards and trustee of the church.
He was employed as a farmer, and as a township clerk.
He emigrated to Canada in 1819 at the age of 12 years.
He was Reeve of Arran Township in 1859

He was reputed to be a very strong-willed individual, who would not even lift his feet when the kitchen floor was being swept.
He served as a board member of the Wesleyan Church, Invermay Circuit.

Children from this marriage were:

27 F    i. Elizabeth Evans was born about 1854 in Canada West.

28 M    ii. David Evans was born on Sep 16, 1858 in Stayner, Nottawasaga Twp., Simcoe Cty. ON, died on Jan 11, 1917 in Toronto, Ontario aged 58, and was buried on Jan 13, 1917 in Prospect Cemetery, Toronto On.

General Notes: At the time of William & Janes son David's marriage in 1880 to Margaret Jane Arthurs she had a small child, Florence from a previous relationship. David, Margaret & little Florence were found in the 1881 Census residing in the residence next door to his parents Wm. & Jane Evans.

David married Margaret Jane Arthurs on Sep 15, 1880 in Beaverton, Georgina Twp., York Cty., ON. Margaret was born on Aug 26, 1857 in Shanty Bay, ON and died on Nov 30, 1933 in Toronto, Ontario aged 76.

Death Notes: Margaret died at the home of her daughter, Minnie Maude wife of John Deacon at 123 Havelock Street in Toronto. She was buried by her son in law, John Deacon, was 75 years of age and died of chronic nephritis, according to the cemetery & death records. Margaret has a tombstone 17-255 #6, inside the Rogers Rd gate to the left by the road. Also buried with Margaret at the Prospect Cemetery is daughter Maude & son Harry.

Obituary taken from the Toronto Star Archives in April 2004 by S.Evans:
Toronto Star, Friday Dec 1, 1933 - Evans, Margaret, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Deacon of 123 Havelock Street on Thursday, November 30, 1933, Margaret Arthurs, wife of the late David Evans in her 75th year. Funeral on Saturday at 3:30pm. Internment at Prospect Cemetery. "Absent from the body, present with the Lord".

General Notes: Margaret was baptized on Nov 29th, 1857 at St. Thomas Anglican Church in Shanty Bay by Rev. S.B. Ardagh & was later baptized in the Roman Catholic faith at a later date. The parish records of St. Joseph's RC Church of Beaverton, Ontario (1858-1910) shows the baptism of Margaret aged 21 years, on Sept 29th, 1878, sponsors were JeanBaptiste Charpentier & his wife Angeline, by Father Brair.

It is believed that Margaret, following the death of her father in 1863 was farmed out & lived with the Little family, George & Susan Little, on their farm in York West, Vaughan County & was employed in the household as a housekeeper / servant as indicated in the 1871 Canadian census. It was this same Geo. Little who fathered a child ( Florance born in 1876 ) with the young Margaret Arthurs who was age 18 years at the time. It seems that until Margaret married David Evans, the child bore the Little surname & following her marriage to David she was later adopted by David & given the Evans surname.

Elizabeth had 2 children before her marriage to Wren Silaway. The first child, a daughter Julie, was raised in the Tara area.
The second child George caused quite a sensation in the papers of the day, as Elizabeth named James Mathias Monkman as his father. James was the teacher at Arran Lake School. He was widowed with a small son at the time. He was not hired as teacher again, and in later years became Clerk of Arran Township.

"In 1885 Elizabeth gave up her children, moved to Michigan and married Wren Silloway. We don't know who got the daughter Julia who was by then eight, but the Hunt family adopted George. Elizabeth and Wren had a daughter. Although they would come to Allenford to visit her family as far as I know she never saw my father or his siblings. Elizabeth's daughter by her husband wrote to her first child Julia over the years, but I've not heard of any contact with George. My father did not know the Michigan family existed until the year he died, 1979."

"Wren wouldn't take the two children so Julie was placed with an unknown family and all trace of her was lost until 1900 when she married and the announcement was in the Tara paper. When she was admitted to hospital in Saskatchewan, several years later, she gave her mother's name as Elizabeth and gave her grandfather's name as her father. George was given up for adoption to Richard and Georgeanna Petty Hunt. Georgeanna Hellier Petty was a niece of Tom Dornan's wife Jane Hellyer. Tom and Jane were Aunt and Uncle of Elizabeth. Elizabeth and Wren Silaway lived in the Sparta area in the state of Michigan. At least two of her sisters had married and lived in that area as well.
Alfred Hunt was told by Mary Aiken that Elizabeth was alive in 1927 when his father, her son by James Monkman, died. Mary attended the funeral and spoke to Alfred. She told him that the reason she had taken Milton in was "because of the relationship". She would have told him more but other family members stopped her. Alfred never had another opportunity to speak to her about his grandmother."

My father and grandfather, Don and Louis Monkman, operated the general store on the southwest corner of Queen and King Streets. (Cookstown) At one time, I worked there as well. The store had groceries, hardware, guns and pain. We also sold cement and lent out a cement mixer, until one time someone took it but didn't bring it back. Eventually, in 1976, when Grandpa grew old and there was no one to run the store anymore, it was sold.
(Brian Monkman; Memories of Cookstown, pg 5, Innisfil Historical Society)

My father, Don Monkman, owned the garage on the northeast corner of Highways 27 and 89 for about 30 years (Cookstown), beginning in the mid 1940's. The garage was associated with Imperial Oil (Esso) from 1947 until 1976, and with Chrysler Canada from 1946 until 1975. At one time or another, my brother Ted, sisters Bev and
Janice, and I all worked at the garage. (I also worked at the general store and the egg grading station both owned by my grandfather Louis Monkman.) In addition to selling and servicing Chrysler products, we sold Philco radios, stereo living room units, and televisions for many years. (This ended when the Philco company was bout out by Ford and Chrysler forced us to stop selling Philco products.) The garage was a busy place, and some times were busier than others - Sunday nights during the summer months, for example. We were the only gas station open between the lakes and Toronto, and we stayed open until 2 a.m. Snow storms presented a particular challenge, and the worst that I can remember happened in the late 1950's and early 60's. (By that time we were no longer using the small converted half- ton truck with the hand crank winch; instead, we had a three- ton truck.) When the roads were blocked, Dad and I, along with a mechanic (either Doug Campbell or Ivel Wood), went out with long poles in front of the Department of Highways snow blower, looking for cards that were covered with snow, between town and Sharp's Hill. This also happened many times between town and 400. I can remember find an Alliston doctor's car at the top of Clover Hill. Until we put the rods into the four-foot deep snow, we didn't realize that we were standing on top of the car? We had to dig out the back end of the car by shovel, and then pull it out of the snow bank, using the tow truck and cables, so the blower cold keep going through the large drifts. I also recall one very cold Christmas Day. Dad got so many calls from people needing help, that he and I were out in the tows trucks from 10 a.m. until supper time. And we even went out again after supper!

Death Notes: Mon. April 23, 1945 The Toronto Star
"MONKMAN, James Albert - Suddenly at his home, 166 Annette St., Sunday, April 22, 1945, James Albert Monkman, beloved husband of May Campbell, dear father of Mrs. George Cult (Edna), Mrs. James Donaghy (Lenore), Pte. Herbert Monkman, and Ruby Monkman, of New Orleans. Resting at the funeral chapel of William Speers, 282A Dundas St. (near Keele). Service in chapel Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Interment Park Lawn Cemetery"

The last name Cult for daughter Edna is likely a misprint. In a later obituary for Lenore Donaghy, Edna's last name is spelled Culp.

Burial Notes: Newspaper clipping states interment at Park Lawn Cemetery. However, a phone call made in 2004 to Park Lawn Cemetery revealed the fact that they were not buried there, rather they were buried in Toronto's Prospect Cemetery - Section 18, lot #658, with his wife May Campbell
Records at Prospect Cemetery indicate that the owner of the gravesite is Margaret Monkman, probably his sister(?)

General Notes: 1881 Census - he is 4 years old living with grandparents (James "Squire" & Catherine)
1891 Census - he is 14 living with father James Mathias & stepmother Margaret Hannah
1901 Census - there is a Jas. Monkman living in Essa Twp. as a boarder (single), and who was a printer by trade. However, the date of birth is recorded as Aug. 10 1880 (age 20), which does not agree to his stated date of birth on his marriage registration. The marriage registration does indicate that he was a printer, however.

Also, cousin Jeannette Rodie wrote on Feb 10, 2012: "My mother however was born in Detroit, as their father had taken a printers job there for a couple of years"

Elyce Gardner (Monkman-Brinkman) remembers that the Monkman family were at one time living on Annette Street, Toronto, in a house owned by an Aunt Margaret, possibly James' sister Margaret, who may also have owned the burial plot in which he was buried(?)

in 1915 (July) James emigrated to USA, arriving at Detroit Michigan, USA, and indicated May was living at 126 Pauline Ave. N. in Toronto. Wife May followed in April 1916 - the family lived at 872 Porter St. in Detroit Mich.

in Sept. 12, 1918, James was drafted into the USA Army for WW I. He indicated his address as 872 Porter Street, Detroit Michigan.

in January 1920 James and May, with 3 children (Ruby - 17; Edna - 8; and Lenore - 3 1/2) were living in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan, next door to May's brother Harry (35); his wife Agnes (33) and daughter Margaret (1) at 872 Porter Street, Detroit Michigan.
However, their son, James Herbert, is not on this 1920 census - he appears on the 1921 census, age 11 mos

1921 Census - Parkdale, Toronto ON - age 44
address was: 66 Moutray Avenu

1940 - Canada Voters Lists, 1935-1980 lists the following living at 51 Gillespie Ave., Toronto:

Sister-in-Law Gail (Gardner) says he went by the name "Herb" and his nickname was "Speed", he worked for a dry cleaners before marriage, at some point worked for Avro, and he was colour blind. He had 3 sisters, Edna, Lenore and Ruby, and was a soldier in WW II.

There is record of a J.H. Monkman who was in the 5th Infantry Brigade Ground Defence Platoon (Lorne Scots - Regimental No. B-149977)
The file indicates that he was "taken on strength" as Private on Oct. 18 1944 and later he was "struck off Strength" as Lance Corporal on Mar 3 1945.
We know that John's father came home from the war on compassionate leave in March 1945 after a house fire in Feb. of that year almost took the life of his firstborn, John Herbert.
Efforts are being made to obtain a copy of the record, but proof of his death is required..

"Speed had a car with a rumble seat. We had gone on a picnic, had a good day, but coming home it poured raining. I remember climbing out of the back soaking wet. Johnny would love to have that car today. Our days became busy with families and we lost track of one another for a while. Speed lived a few doors from Aunt Mary's on Gillespie Ave. He was a good looking man. Johnny looks a lot like him." (note from cousin Marg James July 8/04)

As of 2012 no documentation showing proof or information has been found regarding his birth or death. His parents names were located on his certificate of marriage, but even that is questionable. He indicated that his mother's name was Mary Elizabeth Campbell. However, according to her own marriage registration (York County # 001520), her name was May L. Campbell. Her birth certificate reads "Lenna Winifred May Campbell". The Obituary in the Toronto Star of April 23, 1945 indicates that May Campbell was the mother of Pte. Herbert Monkman and his three sisters, Edna, Lenore and Ruby.
Both his address on his certificate of marriage, and the address on his father's obituary is 166 Annette Street.
These proofs combined are considered sufficient to say for certain that James Herbert Monkman was the son of James Albert Monkman and May Campbell. Nonetheless, research is ongoing to obtain documentation of his birth and death.

"I must confess that I probably do not have a great deal of factual or rather documented proof re uncle herbie as to his birth or death. I know he was 4 years younger than my mom and she was born Dec. 31, 1916. Herb I believe was born in July 1920. Herb also remarried but not until near his own death. He lived with aunt Peggy for many years. They were only actually married a short time when he had a stroke, a very severe one leaving him unable to walk or talk and had to reside in Sunnybrook veterns hospital until his death."
